Matteo Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Genius in Silver Lining for Unstable Lazio

The atmosphere at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. The home side was losing against Torino, an opponent that had conceded a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Unraveling?

Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or was there ever any cohesion maintaining its structure from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager in the summer transfer window, only for him admitted that the club had not mentioned a registration embargo they were facing for financial irregularities. Rumours that he might quit were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.

Lazio were just as chaotic on the pitch as behind the scenes, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining first five games, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to tell if progress is being made or imploding.

Cancellieri's Surprising Return

At least one man kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio this year. He was on last season with Parma on loan and, early this summer, his owning club were pushing for him to extend his stay temporarily. The transfer ban necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team lacking backup options.

He joined initially under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances for Lazio in 2022-23, all but one of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."

Finding His Best Role

It's possible the coach was persistently working to identify the specific characteristics of his skill set. Originally described as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
